Updates to Short-term Response Analysis

There have been a number of recent updates to the Short-term Response Analysis app. These include:

  • Chart for determining re-entry using different parameters: This chart gives you values for a particular parameter over time (based on a user-defined time window size and step). A threshold value for that parameter can be set, allowing you to see when the seismic data drops below that threshold. The parameter investigated can currently be set to energy, event count, hazard, background ratio and activity rate probability. For more information about these parameters, see Tierney et al. 2019.

Updates to Hazard Assessment app

A few new features have been added to the Hazard Assessment application, aiming to improve usability, understanding and investigation. The first addition is a chart in the hazard setup window to indicate the current date range settings. Usually the date range for calculating b-value will be a lot longer than for calculating event rate. Hopefully the chart will be a handy visual aid to help you keep your bearings when setting the hazard analysis periods.

What on Earth is MUL?

Yes, this is a frequently asked question.... MULM_{UL} or MUpperLimitM_{Upper-Limit} refers to the truncating magnitude of the Gutenberg-Richter distribution. We used to refer to this as Mmax in the Hazard Assessment app and on the frequency-magnitude chart but we found there was confusion caused by Mmax being used to describe multiple things. Hopefully if we refer to MULM_{UL} or the upper-limit magnitude, this will clear up the terminology a little.

New Monitoring/Control Room App

We previously created a Basic Seismic Monitoring app but it didn't get widely used. We've taken another swing at a new version released late in 2017.

The new app is intended for mine control room operators to monitor the latest seismicity and communicate event alerts and exclusion areas depending on site specific rules. Each site can set up their own event alert and exclusion settings in the Basic Seismic Monitoring (Admin) application and then the main application is a simplified interface for the viewer.
